WHY AND WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SERVING ON A NONPROFIT BOARD:
Free Telluride Workshop in Spanish and English to Answer Questions About Nonprofit Boards
TELLURIDE, Colo. – (July 15, 2023) Have you ever wondered what it would be like to serve on a nonprofit board or been asked to serve but hesitated because you were not sure of the responsibilities? The Telluride Foundation and the Wilkinson Public Library are teaming up to provide a basic workshop to demystify the role of nonprofit board members. This workshop will be held Tuesday, August 1 from 5pm to 7pm in the Wilkinson Public Library Program Room. It will be a hybrid meeting so participants can attend in person or via Zoom. It will be a bilingual meeting, in both Spanish and English, and food and childcare will be provided.
Participants can expect to learn the basics of nonprofit boards; for example, what board members are expected to do, their responsibilities, and how boards typically function. There will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions, as well as hear from people who are currently board members. This workshop will be facilitated by Claudia Garcia Curzio, Latinx Outreach Specialist at the Wilkinson Public Library; Kathleen Morgan, English Language Instructor through Bright Futures; and April Montgomery, VP Programs at the Telluride Foundation. Also, Antonio Rodriguez will provide interpretation. According to Morgan, “A number of advanced level English Language Learners asked questions about nonprofits and serving on boards during class. This training came out of a mutual desire to empower, inform, and support immigrants serving on nonprofits in our community.”
According to Garcia Curzio, “Our community demographics have changed in the last 20 years, and our boards need to be reflective of our current community members. I serve on many boards in Telluride and hope that I’m creating a pathway for more immigrant community members to feel comfortable serving on boards.”
“Nonprofits are often looking for new board members that reflect the makeup of their community,” said April Montgomery, VP Programs at the Telluride Foundation. “There are many benefits to serving on a board, and we hope this workshop will encourage new people to consider giving back to their community through board service.”

Taller gratuito de Telluride en Español e Inglés para Responder Preguntas Sobre Juntas sin Fines de Lucro
TELLURIDE, Colo – (15 de julio del 2023) ¿Alguna vez se ha preguntado cómo sería servir en una junta sin fines de lucro o se le ha pedido que sirva, pero dudó porque no estaba seguro de las responsabilidades? La Fundación de Telluride y la Biblioteca Pública de Wilkinson se están uniendo para proporcionar un taller básico para desmitificar el papel de los miembros de la junta sin fines de lucro. Este taller será el martes 1 de agosto de 5pm a 7pm en la Sala del Programa de la Biblioteca Pública de Wilkinson. Será una reunión híbrida para que los participantes puedan asistir en persona o a través de Zoom. Será una reunión bilingüe, tanto en español como en inglés, y se proporcionará comida y cuidado de niños.
Los participantes pueden esperar aprender los conceptos básicos de las juntas sin fines de lucro, por ejemplo, lo que se espera que hagan los miembros de la junta, sus responsabilidades y cómo suelen funcionar las juntas. Según Morgan, “Varios estudiantes de inglés de nivel avanzado hicieron preguntas sobre organizaciones sin fines de lucro y servir en juntas durante la clase. Esta capacitación surgió de un deseo mutuo de empoderar, informar y apoyar a los inmigrantes que sirven en organizaciones sin fines de lucro en nuestra comunidad”.
Según García Curzio, “Nuestra demografía de la comunidad ha cambiado en los últimos 20 años, y nuestras juntas deben reflejar a nuestros miembros actuales de la comunidad. Sirvo en muchas juntas en Telluride y espero estar creando un camino para que más miembros de la comunidad inmigrante se sientan cómodos sirviendo en las juntas”.
